CES 2014: 3 new printers for MakerBot Bre Pettis, CEO of MakerBot, took the opportunity of the CES 2014 show in Las Vegas to unveil no less than 3 new 3D printers (the takeover by Stratasys is certainly not for nothing), during a press conference full of journalists eager for information. The models in question are the Replicator Mini, the Replicator 5th Generation and the Replicator Z18, which have in common that they embed a brand new "intelligent" extruder that pauses 3D printing in case of filament absence, able to send notifications to MakerBot software and simple to replace.
The MakerBot Replicator MiniThe MakerBot Replicator Mini is the entry-level product at MakerBot. Its name comes from its compact shape and the resulting printing volume of only 10 x 10 x 10 x 12.5 cm. This is a very popular model that is intended to be "plug & play", thanks in particular to its automatic calibration function. It is also a 3D printer connected (via Wi-Fi or USB) and remotely controllable from a smartphone with a dedicated application.
A mini-camera also allows you to monitor printing from a mobile device with this same application. Detailed features and performance are not yet available, but for $1375, you can't expect incredible resolution and speed. It can already be compared to the brand new 3D Systems Cube 3. photo gallery of the Replicator Mini The MakerBot Replicator 5th generation The Replicator 5th generation logically succeeds the Replicator 2 with an 11% larger printing volume, or about 25.2 x 19.9 x 15.0 cm.
The size is therefore larger with a volume of 52.8 x 44.1 x 41.0 cm for 16 kg. It remains compatible only with PLA for an identical layer thickness of 100 microns. Like its little sister the Mini, it is connected (via Wi-Fi, USB or Ethernet) and can be remotely monitored thanks to a mini-camera. It also has a 3.5″ LCD control screen (not touch-sensitive), making it autonomous.
Performance level, there is only the printing speed which remains unknown and its price is 2899 $. 5th Generation Replicator Photo Gallery The MakerBot Z18 With the Replicator Z18, MakerBot is intended for professionals or wealthy individuals.
However, at $6,499, it only offers a huge printing volume of 30.5 x 30.5 x 30.5 x 45.7 cm and a new printing chamber based on Stratasys patents, suitable for large objects with a thinner and more reliable tray. In terms of functionality and performance, it is the same as the 5th Generation (100 micron resolution, LCD screens, connectivity, mini-camera, etc.).Replicator Z18 Photo Gallery New software and services to complete the MakerBotMakerBot ecosystem have not focused on hardware and have taken the opportunity to announce several software products including MakerBot Desktop (available early February) and MakerBot Mobile (planned for spring for iOS and later this year for Android)
that provide a complete 3D printing solution coupled with their Thingiverse cloud solution. These two applications exploit the mini-camera and the new intelligent and connected print head of these 3 new 3D printers to control them remotely. MakerBot PrintShop is a tablet application designed to make 3D modeling fun and accessible to everyone because of its simplicity.
Also note the launch of the MakerBot Digital Store, which seems to be shading Thingiverse with a marketplace of quality items optimized for Replicator 2 printers and higher models.MakerBot Digital Store These ads confirm Makerbot's desire to dominate the market and expand by covering all needs, from the individual who wants to print small items for an affordable price, to manufacturers who have more important needs.
The release of the mobile application makes Makerbot printers real connected objects, an increasingly marked trend that will continue in 2019.
