NASA project: a 3D printed pizza Last year, we already saw printers that run on food and even more attractive, with chocolate. However, the raw material must be the same food in liquid form.

It is specifically on this point that NASA is currently working on, printing food based on synthetic food. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration even awarded the $125,000 prize to "Systems & Materials Research Corporation" to achieve this feat, starting with the printing of a pizza.

NASA's primary use would be to feed its astronauts sent into space with something other than freeze-dried tube food, but the project's stakeholders are already considering satisfying the hunger of the world's population.

The printer chosen for this project, which has a 6-month deadline, is the RepRap, an Open Source printer. The "cartridges" whose lifespan is estimated at 30 years will be composed of insects, algae, sugars, grass, water and oil in powder... Appetizing! We can imagine that Jean-Pierre Coffe will not like it (we can already hear him scream "but it's shit!") and all the fine palates lovers of good food but it's worth living well with his time.

The time to replace production line machines with simple 3D printers is coming soon for Picard et al! We can even replace our recipe books with digital files that can be easily exchanged on the Internet.
