Interview: simplified 3D modeling with Minecraft sauce and 3D Slash software During the first Maker Faire Paris at the end of June, I had the opportunity to discover a UFO among the 3D modeling software.Very inspired by the famous video game Minecraft, 3D Slash seduced me with its simplicity. I also had the pleasure of talking to its developer Sylvain Huet, creator of the famous connected rabbit Nabaztag to whom I asked some questions. Sylvain, can you introduce yourself and explain what 3D Slash is? I am a French entrepreneur who has always been interested in new ideas. I was a pioneer of virtual worlds with the Second World and a pioneer of objects connected with the Nabaztag of which I was the co-founder and CTO.
3D Slash is a software that allows the general public to enter the 3D printing revolution. Rather than simply printing objects made by others, this is about creating or improving the part you want to print yourself. how did the idea of creating this 3D modeling software come about?
I have worked with CAD software without ever having to use it. They are very complex and even their experienced users find them boring. I wanted to find an approach that was fun and effective. It was when I saw my children playing Minecraft that I thought we could quickly design simple objects while having fun. But Minecraft alone does not allow you to do specific things, to achieve this, you have to improve the concept, while keeping the principle "1 click = 1 operation": what do you think are your competitors (we can imagine Sketchup) and what are your strong points that set you apart from them? the competitors you think of (Sketchup or Tinkercad) are from traditional CAD software. Even if simplified, they keep the DNA, and this DNA is repellent for the general public. The use is slow, imprecise and very technical.
Those who welcome the general public to their Fablabs will confirm this. This is also the case for La Poste, which has just installed 3D Slash in its 3D spaces, whereas the use of Sketchup did not take off there. 3D Slash does not put any barrier at the entrance: even children immediately enter the creative game. In addition, 3D Slash makes it easy to transfer a file created by another file. The work becomes iterative. 3D Slash tutorial with the basic functionsA what audience is 3D Slash for and on what platforms is it running? 3D Slash is for everyone, as soon as you have an idea or a need for an object to print. For adults, it will often be DIY or prototyping.
For children the possibilities are endless between game repair, the creation of new accessories, etc. The software is already available on Windows, Mac and Linux. At the last Makerfaire Paris, I showed the versions for iPad tablet and Android. 3D Slash preview on iPad and Android tablets (from 35 seconds)Did you need financial support and if so, who followed you?
I have just created the dedicated company and I am in the process of completing the first round of financing, and during the Maker Faire de Paris, you told us that the software is still in Beta and free. Do you have more or less long-term development projects and will it remain free of charge? betatest allows me to improve the ergonomics and functionalities of the software, on the one hand, and to identify the business model on the other hand. I plan to release it at the end of the summer, with the release of version 1.0, which will bring a new and totally revolutionary feature. Speaking of the Maker Faire, what were the benefits of the exhibition for 3DSlash?
at the Lépine competition, at the beginning of May, for which I received the gold medal, I had met the largest audience (the Lépine competition is part of the Paris Fair). At the great Maker Faire in San Matteo and then at the more modest one in Paris, I met a much more informed audience. Manufacturers of printers, distributors, but also entrepreneurs of new "3D cybercafés", all have realized the potential of 3D Slash, which allows them to offer a complete user experience to their customers.
Many contacts so I haven't had time to exploit everything yet, your impression on the LesImprimantes3D.fr website, your website is very important for the evangelization of the general public. I regularly meet people who are interested in 3D printing but who don't jump at the chance because they feel lost in the subject: which printer to choose, how to print, how I will manage, who will be able to help me, what others are doing with their printer, what materials are available...
People need to feel supported, with very concrete questions, not just with buzz without tomorrow.
