CES 2014: OWL Nano, the 3D nano resolution printer 3D plastic extrusion printers have invaded the market with a stagnant resolution of around 100 microns and it has become extremely difficult to make a choice among them (several of them have already asked themselves the question on the forum).Presented at CES 2014 this week, the futuristic 3D printer OWL Nano is changing the game with stereolithography that allows it to reach a resolution of 100 nanometers, 1000 times more accurate than the Replicator 2. The manufacturer is rather stingy in terms of features and performance, only the resolution and printing volume of 15 x 15 x 15 x 20 cm are communicated but the few published achievements speak for themselves, the rendering is rather impressive (without any pun intended). Photo gallery: 3D printed objects with the OWL Nano If the OWL Nano does better than its competitors who print by SLA like the FSL3D Pegasus Touch or the FormLabs Form1, it is - among other things - thanks to a redesigned laser, placed as close as possible to the object and without mirrors that induced distortion.
Contrary to what 3D Systems' lawsuit against Formlabs and Kickstarter last year for patent infringement related to stereolithography might suggest, other manufacturers are embarking on this promising technology, which should therefore progress with the help of competitors.
3D printers oriented towards nanotechnology have a bright future in fields as complex as medical (nanobiology), energy (photovoltaic panel cells) and electronics (miniaturization of semiconductors).
